The Challenge
Parkinson’s disease is a degenerative movement disorder which can cause deterioration of motor skills, balance, speech and sensory function.
The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and more than 60,000 people are diagnosed each year. Rock Steady Boxing is the first gym in the country dedicated to the fight against Parkinson’s.
In our gym, exercises are largely adapted from boxing drills. Boxers condition for optimal agility, speed, muscular endurance, accuracy, hand-eye coordination, footwork and overall strength to defend against and overcome opponents. At RSB, Parkinson’s disease is the opponent. Exercises vary in purpose and form but share one common trait: they are rigorous and intended to extend the perceived capabilities of the participant.
The Rock Steady Boxing Solution
Various studies in the 1980s and 1990s supported the notion that rigorous exercise, emphasizing gross motor movement, balance, core strength, and rhythm, could favorably impact range of motion, flexibility, posture, gait, and activities of daily living. More recent studies, most notably at Cleveland Clinic, focus on the concept of intense “forced” exercise, and have begun to suggest that certain kinds of exercise may be neuro-protective, i.e., actually slowing disease progression.
Our clients attest, and academic institutions, such as University of Indianapolis and Butler University, are reporting and documenting the improved quality of life among our boxers. Discovery of a cure may be many years away but in the last seven years, there is evidence that progress is made in all stages of the disease by those participating in the RSB program.
How do I get started?
Every new class member undergoes an initial assessment with one of our therapists/coaches. This is an overall wellness and movement evaluation to help determine the best class level for you. Call Beth at (816) 377-6285 to schedule your initial assessment.
What should I expect?
The class assigned to you after your initial assessment was chosen to meet your specific level of Parkinson’s or movement disorder. You can expect to be greeted warmly by the staff and your fellow boxers on your first day, and you can expect to meet lots of people who share the same challenges brought by PD. Classes are 60 minutes long, which include warm-ups, the workout, and a cool-down.
We have taken every precaution regarding the COVID-19 Pandemic. Class sizes will be reduced to accommodate social distancing recommendations and all members will have symptom screening assessment upon each visit. All participants are required to wear a mask before and after class, and if tolerated is also recommended during class.
What if I can’t keep up?
It is important that at any time, if you feel you cannot keep up or become frustrated at not being able to perform at the level of the people around you, that you communicate that to your Coaches. They can offer modifications and suggestions on alternative training methods to help you focus on specific symptoms or challenges. Do not do any exercises that you are uncomfortable doing – talk to your Coaches first if you are unsure of a specific exercise. Rock Steady offers an encouraging, non-judgmental environment that will hopefully allow you to share your specific concerns when necessary. Don’t forget we are also physical and occupational therapists, and should the need arise, we can evaluate you for outpatient therapies.
What do I wear?
Wear comfortable, breathable clothes that allow you to move freely. Most of our members wear sweatpants or shorts and t-shirts. Gym shoes are preferred.
What do I need to bring?
We stress the importance of staying properly hydrated, so make sure to bring plenty of water. (Water bottles with straws are easier to use with boxing gloves on!)
How often should I come to class?
How many times per week a person should attend is determined on an individual basis. It is generally recommended that a person attend three classes per week in order to see positive results. We encourage all of our members to attend as many times as possible throughout the week!
How do I check in?
You will be issued a “membership card” that you will need to bring to every class. Enter through the main entrance of the Healthcare Resort of Olathe and sign in, in the “Rock Steady Boxing” Sign in book. This sign in book will also be used for attendance purposes for billing.
Where can I put my things?
There is a shelf designated for rock steady class members to put personal items in the gym. Do not bring items of significant value. This space will be big enough for your keys, wallet, and water bottle.
What is the cost?
Initial Evaluation cost typically covered through Medicare B or Managed Care B. Co-pays vary depending on the type of insurance you carry. If you wish to pay for this evaluation with out insurance, the cost is $50. 1 on 1 movement classes may be covered under your Part B insurance at no additional cost to you. Please make sure to note on your inquiry form your type of insurance so we can update you with all options. Group classes are priced per class cost of $15. As our program develops we intend to offer more class times and package pricing. We do recommend that you purchase your own boxing gloves & wraps for class. We do, however, offer a limited number of “community” gloves that will be disinfected after each class.
How do I pay for Rock Steady classes?
Don’t forget these Parkinson’s wellness classes may be covered under your Part B Insurance and on your health savings card. You will pay remaining balances to a rehab representative for each class that you attend. We recommend keeping a credit card on file, and we will bill the card monthly for the classes you have attended. We accept cash, Visa and Master credit cards, and private checks. If you choose to pay cash or check, the class fee is due before each class begins.
Cornermen
At Rock Steady Boxing, taking care of our care partners (we call them “Cornermen”) is an important part of our program. Cornermen give so much back to Rock Steady by creating support groups, assisting and organizing our functions and fundraisers, and giving much needed feedback to us about how we can better meet the needs of our participants.
Cornermen are an integral piece to the Rock Steady program. The assistance provided by cornermen to the boxer is crucial to ensure that boxer gets to participate in each class to their fullest abilities. Cornermen also provide personalized attention to that boxer to ensure the safety of the boxer throughout the different exercises during class.
Parkinson’s boxing members are entitled to select a “cornerman”, who may attend Rock Steady Boxing classes at no additional cost.
The Cornerman
Must accompany the Parkinson’s boxer who designated them as their cornerman in order to participate in the workout
- Must be by the boxer’s side throughout class to assist the boxer through the workout
- May need to step in as an assistant to volunteers or head coaches during class
- Will become familiar with Rock Steady Boxing emergency procedures
- Will understand that our Parkinson’s boxers are first priority for head coaches and volunteers
- Will agree to follow the same rules and regulations as Rock Steady members
Final Word
We are happy to have you as part of our Rock Steady Boxing Family! You will find very quickly that it is more than just a boxing class. A couple of notes to remember:
Listen to Your Body
We are here to push you past your “comfort zone” but not past your ability. There is no shame in needing a rest or asking for a modification to an exercise. You know your body and what is going on. No one will judge you for needing to adapt. We also offer our regular outpatient therapy services, if there is ever a time that you need those 1-1 sessions for Physical or Occupational Therapy.
Let Us Know if You Need Anything
If you ever have questions, comments, or concerns please don’t hesitate to talk to one of our coaches. You are building a support team and we are one part of that team.
Have Fun!
Yes, the class is going to be work. Some days you will leave hot, sweaty and tired. But it should also be fun. We will do our best to provide an atmosphere to have fun while working out.
